From 2019 onwards the Tameside Overall Local Prize will incorporate
'The Brian Hill Memorial Award'

'The Brian Hill Memorial Award'
is given to the best local band and means so much to Brian's family. The brass band contest was an important part of their lives for over 20 years. After becoming the landlord of The Tame Valley in 1996, Brian wanted to bring the brass band competition to Dukinfield and in 1998 he did just that.

'The Brian Hill Memorial Award' is given to the best local band and means so much to Brian's family. The brass band contest was an important part of their lives for over 20 years. After becoming the landlord of The Tame Valley in 1996, Brian wanted to bring the brass band competition to Dukinfield and in 1998 he did just that.

It was one of the first priorities as Landlord. Brian wanted to host the brass band contest because it was something he was very passionate about and loved. He would watch them each year in Oldham and marvel at the atmosphere and the celebration of music.

Each year Brian, his wife Denise and three daughters worked hard to host the brass band contest at The Tame Valley, which was their busiest event of the year. He took the brass band contest in Dukinfield from nothing to a record of 52 bands Brian’s favourite band was the grimesthorpe band and he was proud if they attended the Tameside brass band contest.

Brian was the secretary on the Friends of Whit Friday Brass Band committee and worked tirelessly each year to gain funding and sponsorship with local businesses, along with building a reputation for the brass band contest in Tameside as a whole. Upon retirement he took the role of Chairman of Friends of Whit Friday.

Sadly after a short battle with cancer, Brian lost his life in September 2018. Only the day before he was meeting to tie up the loose ends for the brass band contest, as he knew he could not continue to be on the committee.

It is with great pleasure that we have this award to put forward at the next brass band competition. Brian loved the buzz of the competition and hosting such a wonderful event each year.  I know he would love the fact that his legacy lives on in this award. Brian loved the Tameside Brass band contest and his desire to make the contest into what it is today will live on forever.

It was such a privilege to know Brian and a pleasure that he asked me to take over the position of FOWFBBC Chairman. I hope I can continue to achieve what Brian has and also make the Brass band contest into the best event in Tameside.
